Where is the plastic collected from?
Plastic is collected from various sources, depending on local needs and regional context. Generally the waste is collected from the beach, rivers, water ways, illegal dumpsites.
Why do we work in countries of the Global South?
Plastic pollution is most problematic in the Global South, where waste systems are inefficient or non-existent. One of the main source of their pollution problem is the waste exported from the western countries (e.g. EU, USA) that cannot be appropriately managed. Furthermore, by collecting plastic in the Global South, we can provide local communities with valuable income and education opportunities and empower vulnerable groups like women where it is needed the most.
What happens to the recyclable waste?
Generally, the waste gets sorted between recyclable and non-recyclable waste. The recyclable waste is transported to the recycling facilities, where it gets recycled and reused for various purposes.
What happens to the non-recyclable products?
This depends on the project. In locations where there are alternative solutions to landfill, the collected waste can be used for producing alternatives to fuel and/or molding the waste into bricks for construction. However, in some cases there is no technology and/or solution yet in place to deal with the non-recyclable waste, so the waste gets taken to a legal landfill. The waste ending up in the legal-landfill is not the desired solution, however it might be the only one currently available and preferable to illegal dumpsites. We aim to help projects find alternative solutions.
